The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai and several districts in Maharashtra, warning of intensifying heat and humidity in the coming days. The alert will remain in effect for the next three days, covering Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg.
What Does a Yellow Alert Mean?
A yellow alert is a weather warning that signals potentially hazardous conditions and urges residents to stay cautious. While it doesn’t indicate an immediate threat, it highlights the need to take preventive measures against heat-related illnesses, especially as temperatures continue to climb.
Unseasonal Rainfall and Temperature Spike Raise Concerns
Experts warn that the combination of unseasonal rainfall and early summer heat signals a harsh and premature onset of summer. According to the IMD, temperatures across Maharashtra are projected to increase by 3–4°C until April 11, creating challenging conditions for residents.
Current Temperature Update in Mumbai
The Santacruz weather station in Mumbai recorded a minimum temperature of 24°C and a maximum of 33.8°C on Sunday. While these figures are not extreme, they reflect a consistent upward trend, indicating that the heatwave is likely to intensify further.
Heatwave Conditions Spread Beyond Maharashtra
In addition to Maharashtra, the IMD has also issued heatwave alerts for:
- Delhi and National Capital Region (NCR)
- Several parts of Madhya Pradesh, including Gwalior, Chambal, Sheopur, Guna, Ashok Nagar, Datia, Bhind, Morena, Neemuch, and Mandsaur
- Rajasthan, especially the southwestern regions, which may witness temperatures soaring up to 44–45°C, while eastern Rajasthan could see highs between 42–44°C
IMD’s Advisory: Stay Safe During Extreme Weather
The IMD advises residents in affected regions to:
- Stay hydrated
- Avoid direct sunlight, particularly during peak afternoon hours
- Seek shade or cooler environments
- Wear lightweight, breathable clothing
While a yellow alert is not a red-level emergency, it is a critical warning to stay alert and prioritize health and safety as heatwave risks increase.
Public Awareness is Key, Says IMD Official
Divya E. Surendran, head of the IMD’s Madhya Pradesh weather unit, emphasized the importance of public awareness and preparedness. As temperature anomalies become more frequent, she urges citizens to follow IMD guidelines and stay informed through official weather updates.
