Pakistani actor Fawad Khan is set to make his return to Indian cinema with the upcoming film Abir Gulaal, starring alongside Vaani Kapoor. However, the film’s announcement has stirred controversy, with Maharashtra-based political parties—Shiv Sena and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS)—raising strong objections to his comeback.
Political Parties Oppose Release of ‘Abir Gulaal’ in Maharashtra
Although the ban on Pakistani artists was lifted following the Bombay High Court’s dismissal of a related petition in 2023, tensions continue to linger within certain political groups. The MNS, known for its strong nationalist stance, has publicly opposed the release of the film in the state.
MNS Warns Against Screening the Film
MNS leader Ameya Khopkar criticized the decision to cast a Pakistani actor, stating,
“We were unaware of the film’s release until the trailer was launched. We will not allow this movie to screen in Maharashtra as it features a Pakistani artist. We are gathering further details and will issue a complete statement soon.”
Shiv Sena Also Voices Concerns
Senior Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam, from the Eknath Shinde-led faction, also commented on the matter. Speaking to ETimes, he said,
“There is widespread resentment against Pakistan in India. Pakistani films do not appeal to the Indian audience. Even if some watch them out of curiosity, their success here has always been limited. The Central Government must set a clear policy on whether Pakistani artists should be allowed in Indian cinema.”
The Film and Its Release Plans
Abir Gulaal is a romantic drama set to release in theatres on May 9, 2025. The movie marks Fawad Khan’s return to Bollywood nearly a decade after his last appearance. The official teaser, recently released, showcases a dreamy romance between Khan and Kapoor, drawing attention across digital platforms.
Debate Over Cross-Border Cultural Exchange Continues
This fresh wave of political criticism underlines the ongoing debate over cultural ties between India and Pakistan. While some industry figures support artistic collaboration beyond borders, political parties like MNS and Shiv Sena remain firmly opposed.
It remains to be seen whether these protests will impact the release of Abir Gulaal in Maharashtra or other parts of India.
