The Maharashtra Government will soon introduce water taxis in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) to reduce road traffic and offer faster travel options. This new marine transport system aims to support the city’s growing need for better public transport.
Electric Boats to Connect Gateway of India to Key Locations
The plan includes 30-seater electric boats running from the Gateway of India to Alibaug and Elephanta Island. These eco-friendly vessels will reduce pollution and provide affordable travel by sea.
Swedish Tech to Power Mumbai’s New Water Transport
The state has ordered 15 electric boats from Candela Cruise, a Swedish company known for clean marine technology. Two boats will arrive by August 2025, according to Ports Minister Nitesh Rane.
The Maharashtra Maritime Board will operate the service. These vessels will offer a smooth, clean, and fast ride for daily commuters and tourists.
Detailed Plan with Global Experts
The government has completed a Detailed Project Report (DPR). Officials are now working with international experts to finalize routes and logistics. “We’ve identified eight to nine routes to begin with,” said Rane. “This will help reduce road traffic and give people faster sea travel options.”
Commuters to Get More Choices
Rane added that existing wooden boats will continue to operate. Commuters can choose between the traditional boats and the new electric vessels, just like they choose between buses or ride-sharing apps.
Ro-Ro Service from Mumbai to Malvan Coming Soon
Alongside water taxis, the state will also start a new Ro-Ro (Roll-on/Roll-off) service. It will run from Mazgaon (Mumbai) to Malvan (Sindhudurg district). The trip will take around 4.5 hours. The first service is expected to launch during the Ganesh festival later this year.
