The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has updated its latest weather forecast, warning of heavy rainfall on June 16 across several regions of India. While the red alerts for Kerala and Tamil Nadu have been lifted, the coastal areas of Maharashtra, Goa, and Karnataka remain under a red alert for heavy rains.
Red Alert for Coastal Regions
According to IMD, extremely heavy rainfall (over 20 cm in 24 hours) is expected at isolated places in Coastal Karnataka on June 16. Similar intense rain is also likely in Goa today.
Orange Alerts Across Multiple States
An orange alert remains in effect for:
- Kerala and Tamil Nadu
- Gujarat and Chhattisgarh
- Odisha and Bihar
- Assam, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Meghalaya
- Rajasthan, parts of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Karnataka
These regions are expected to experience heavy to very heavy rains, along with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds.
Thunderstorms in Tamil Nadu and Telangana
In Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, light to moderate rainfall is expected, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds. These weather conditions will also continue in Telangana until June 19.
Monsoon Progress in Western India
As the southwest monsoon advances across parts of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha, these states are likely to receive heavy rainfall today. IMD also forecasts more intense rains in Gujarat and Maharashtra starting June 18 onwards.
Rainfall Expected in Northwest India
In Northwest India, monsoon showers are expected as follows:
- Haryana: Wet spells likely on June 21.
- Uttar Pradesh: Rainfall predicted from June 18.
- Himachal Pradesh: Showers expected from June 20.
- Rajasthan and Uttarakhand: Monsoon rains to continue until June 21.
The IMD continues to monitor the situation and advises residents in affected regions to stay updated and take necessary precautions during this period of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.
