Nagpur, Maharashtra – A Milestone in Sustainable Infrastructure
Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari inaugurated India’s first bio-bitumen-based National Highway stretch on NH-44 in Mansar, Nagpur. The groundbreaking project was developed using lignin-based bio-bitumen technology by Praj Industries in partnership with CSIR-CRRI, NHAI, and Oriental.
A Sustainable Solution to Bitumen Scarcity
This innovative project leverages lignin, a natural polymer sourced from biomass, as a sustainable alternative to traditional bitumen. By using lignin as a binder, this project addresses the shortage of bitumen and reduces India’s reliance on bitumen imports, which currently meet 50% of the nation’s demand.
Advancing Global Sustainability Goals
The use of bio-bitumen offers multiple environmental benefits, including:
- Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by over 70% compared to fossil-based bitumen.
- Support for bio-refineries through additional revenue generation.
- Mitigation of stubble burning, a major contributor to air pollution in India.
Aligning with Aatmanirbhar Bharat Vision
This project aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative, focusing on self-reliance and sustainability. By utilizing lignocellulosic biomass, India is paving the way for domestic production of bio-bitumen and fostering sustainable industrial growth.
A Step Towards a Green Future
The project demonstrates India’s commitment to green technologies and eco-friendly industrial practices, setting a benchmark in flexible pavement technology. It reinforces the nation’s ambition to achieve a sustainable and self-reliant future while contributing to global efforts against climate change.
