Main Accused Arrested; IPS Officer Assigned to Investigate the Case

 Senior Maharashtra Congress leader and vice-president Hidayatullah Patel died after suffering fatal stab injuries in Akola district, police confirmed on Wednesday, January 7, 2026. The attack took place at a local mosque, sending shockwaves across the region.

Stabbing Incident After Mosque Prayers

According to the police, Hidayatullah Patel (66) was attacked with a sharp weapon shortly after offering afternoon prayers (namaz) at the Jama Masjid in Mohala village, located in Akot taluka. The assault occurred at around 1:30 pm on Tuesday, January 6.

The accused allegedly stabbed Mr. Patel in the neck and chest, causing severe bleeding. He was immediately taken to a private hospital in Akot, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries the next morning.


Arrest and Investigation Update

Main Accused Taken into Custody

Police identified the primary accused as Ubed Khan Kalu Khan, also known as Razik Khan Patel (22). Officials stated that the attack was linked to an old personal rivalry.

Six special police teams were formed to trace the suspect. He was arrested around 8 pm on Tuesday from Panaj village in Akot taluka.

Five More Suspects Named

In addition to the main accused, five individuals have been named as suspects in the FIR filed by a relative of the deceased. They include:

  • Raju Vitthalrao Boche

  • Sanjay Ramdas Bodkhe

  • Fazil Asif Khan

  • Farooq Asif Khan


IPS Officer to Lead the Probe

Digital and Forensic Investigation Planned

District Superintendent of Police Archit Chandak announced that the case will be investigated by an IPS-rank officer, Akot SDPO Nikhil Patil.

The police will carry out a digital investigation, examining mobile phone records, call data, and WhatsApp communications of all suspects. Forensic teams have already collected evidence from the crime scene.

Officials assured that the investigation will be fair, transparent, and impartial.


Public Reaction and Last Rites

Villagers Demand Justice

Residents of Mohala village initially refused to perform the last rites of Mr. Patel, demanding the arrest of all suspects. After assurances from senior police officials regarding swift action, the villagers agreed, and the funeral was conducted in the village.

Meanwhile, videos showing the injured Congress leader emerging from the mosque with blood-soaked clothes circulated widely on social media, intensifying public concern.
