The recent hit-and-run case in Mumbai has sent shockwaves through the city and the nation. A woman was tragically killed after being dragged for nearly 1.5 kilometers by a speeding car. This horrific incident has brought several issues to light, demanding introspection and stricter measures.

The Incident

On Sunday morning, a woman was struck by a BMW car in Mumbai’s Worli Sea Link area. According to reports, the driver, identified as Mihir Shah, allegedly dragged the victim for a considerable distance before reversing the car and running her over again. Mihir then fled the scene, attempting to tamper with the car’s registration details. His driver, Rajrishi Bidawat, initially took the blame, but CCTV footage revealed the horrifying truth, leading to his arrest.

The brutality of the crime has sparked outrage. The victim’s family is understandably devastated, demanding swift justice. The incident has also reignited discussions about drunk driving, lax enforcement of traffic rules, and the influence of wealth and privilege.

Deeper Issues Exposed

The Mumbai hit-and-run case exposes several underlying issues that plague Indian cities:

  • Drunk Driving: Reports suggest the accused might have been under the influence of alcohol. Stricter enforcement of drunk driving laws with harsher penalties is crucial.
  • Traffic Violations: Speeding and reckless driving are rampant. There’s a need for better traffic management, stricter enforcement, and improved road infrastructure.
  • Accountability of the Privileged: The alleged involvement of someone from an influential background raises concerns about unequal justice. Everyone, regardless of social standing, must be held accountable for their actions.

Following the incident, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has ordered a crackdown on drunk driving and stricter enforcement of nightlife regulations. The police are conducting a manhunt for Mihir Shah, who remains absconding.
